The tone of this book is generally objective or impartial. Garrow does not attempt to express personal opinions about the history he is reporting upon. Garrow simply reports history as he found it to be in his research. The tone of the book lends more credibility to its legitimacy as a history tome. Many biographies are intended to be a stating of fact, but quite often, the writer will become so close to the subject that they will make suppositions based on their emotions regarding the subject and therefore will change the tone from one of impartial reporting to opinionated narration.
