The train plays many roles in Ernie's story. It is a source of employment for Gustavo and Josy. It is also the vehicle that drives the family, figuratively and literally, all the way to Sacramento. In the figurative sense, Gustavo and Josy are following rail line work until they finally land in Sacramento. At one point in the story, Ernie also comes to believe that the train is delivering war to all parts of Mexico.
