When the novel opens, Rita's mother is her worst enemy. She sees her mom as controlling, unbending, and interfering. Rita's mother, however, is simply doing what a good mother does.... protecting her daughter from a relationship she sees as moving too quickly. By the time Rita's mother joins her on the island, everything is back to normal.
