Oxford represents the duality of the world during the novel’s time period. It is a hub of education filled with some of the brightest minds making substantial progress. Yet, it is also entrenched in old ways, denying many worthy students from attending due to their race or gender. In many ways, Oxford’s colleges control the flow of information, but their selfish agendas prevent it from progressing beyond years of oppression, bigotry, and nepotism. This is why it remains a vital hub for both sides of the main conflict and one that will determine the future itself.
