In some ways, Lovell is a caricature of pure hate and unadulterated racism against anyone who was not born white. While his words and actions are a clear representation of past beliefs, his animosity towards the Chinese is exaggerated to force the reader to see just how heinous these beliefs are. He treats Robin with pure disdain on numerous occasions, claiming that his laziness is a byproduct of his heritage, even though Robin is one of the most hardworking people in the novel. Lovell’s entire plan to bait the Chinese into war is also driven by the false narrative that they are too incompetent to fight back and wasting their potential. The reader is meant to hate him as a clear example of everything wrong with his worldview.
