Griffin is a personification of the belief that violent revolution is the only chance for success against something like the British Empire. While this is something that has been somewhat accepted throughout history, Griffin is the only character before Letty’s betrayal to push the others to believe it. His civil destruction, willingness to sabotage without regard for innocent lives lost, and frustration with others for thinking peace will win is all a representation of countless historical figures who thought like he did. This is also why Griffin ultimately becomes the martyr for his cause, as his death finally convinces Robin that Griffin was right to believe what he did.
