Who is Derek from Autobiography of a Face and what is their importance?

Derek was a patient on Ward 10 while Lucy was hospitalized. He was being treated for asthma, and he provided Lucy with entertainment. Lucy later learned that Derek lived in an unstable home, and the doctors keep him in the hospital more than might otherwise have been necessary for this reason.
