Why is the idea of "motive" so important in the novel? Explain in detail.

In the free enterprise system, people are motivated to work and to achieve. The sense of accomplishment is as important, if not more so, than the money that comes from success. In a socialist/communist society, there is no incentive to work hard. Everyone gets the same benefits as everyone else.
