The train is left with its headlight shining into the limitless night. Soon the light itself will go out. The train which was once a symbol of indescribable progress is now a monument to failure. The passengers, save for Eddie, are carried away in a horse drawn wagon. The symbolism is that when progress ceases things do not simply remain the same, but regress rapidly.
