In ATLAS SHRUGGED, "the top" are the social elite who think that the only way to bring up the common man is by socialistic or communistic means that provide the basic needs for everyone. It does not do away with the social aristocracy but gives them the onus of providing for the underprivileged. On the other hand, "the bottom" represents free enterprise system and the ability to start at the bottom and work ones way up. By contrast, James Taggart walks into the presidency of Taggart Transcontinental without any real prior experience in the business. Dagny, has learned from the ground up and really understands the business she loves.
