To Henry, the chain represents his years of work and accomplishment. Although it is somewhat crudely made, it is the substance that is important to Henry. Rearden Metal is revolutionary and will be of great benefit to future development in industry. To Lillian, it is an insult, cheap jewelry that she will be ashamed of in her social gatherings. To Dagny, it represents all she believes in regarding free enterprise and honest work.
