James Taggart has been caught up in the popular socialist ideas of the day. Instead of wanting to help ship Ellis Wyatt's oil from Colorado, he is all excited about building a rail line that will help the underprivileged country of Mexico. There would be great profit involved in helping Wyatt, a serious motivation of good business. On the other hand, most people think that Mexico will nationalize the rail line once it is finished. The scene is set for the novel's theme of independent capitalism versus socialism
