After school, Nadira visits Ali-uncle, a friend of her father's who lives above a dry cleaning store and works at a magazine shop in the afternoons. She often watches the register and gathers the papers while he rolls out his rug for evening prayers. When Ali-Uncle is not working, he spends his time at the local mosque, and Ma says he is like a guardian spirit.
