What caused the Hossains to seek asylum in Canada in Section 1: Chapter 1?

After 9/11, the Hossains kept on going, though they heard how bad it had gotten from friends who could not get work. Then things got worse, and they felt like the air was frozen around them as they heard news about Homeland Security, the Patriot Act, Code Orange, Special Registration and the hundreds who were being deported.
