How does Elisha respond to the death of Beruriah and Meir's children?

Elisha is unhappy. He stays with Beruriah and Meir throughout the week of mourning. Elisha wonders why a merciful God would cause such suffering and let these children die. He is unable to concentrate on anything else as he searches for reasons in the Jewish traditions and sayings.
