Artemis begins to worry about his mother's condition. Butler notes that he sees the face of a boy on Artemis even though he has the thoughts of a man. The face of the boy is concerned. Butler boldly asks Artemis what is wrong. Artemis begins to express his wonder if his mother will ever recover when an alarm goes off and the conversation is ended. The reader is left to wonder if the subject will ever be brought up again and how Artemis will deal with his mother's illness. Beyond the idea of his mother, Artemis's reaction to Holly is soft as well. When he realizes that he has captured a female, he experiences misgivings. He compares her to Juliet and his mother but only for a moment.
