A literary appreciation of Arrow of God by Chinua Achebe, epitomizes the theories of African Literature through its various themes. Competition is one of the leading themes that Achebe uses as a vehicle for this. There is competition between Ezeulu's wives for his attention, between Ezeulu and a rival priest, and between both of their villages. Lastly, there is the clash of the god Ulu and the Christian god. What this epitomizes in regards to African Literature is the utter failure of colonization and the one size fits all mentality of those countries that sought to dominate and 'civilize' Africa.
