How does the author use foreshadowing in Arms and the Man?

In Act II, Petkoff and Sergius' conversation about a rumor they've heard foreshadows their discovery that Raina and Catherine harbored Bluntschli. The men have heard that there's a story milling about that two women (nobles) hid a man away in their home while their husbands were gone fighting.
