Who is Hisham from Anywhere but Here and what is their importance?

Hisham is Ann's father. He is employed as an Egyptian political science professor when he meets and marries Adele. Ann has no memory of her father, because he deserted the family when she was only four years old. After leaving his teaching position, Hisham works as a waiter while trying to make it in the music business.
