There have been many debates about the involvement of the gods in the play Antigone. On face value they seem to have been pretty 'hands off' during the entire ordeal. Creon has purposely acted at cross purposes against them and yet they don't do anything like striking him down or obviously interfering in any way. In fact, their one advocate, Antigone, seems to suffer for their non-intervention. However, it can also be argued that they knew Antigone's faith and so used her as an instrument to bring about the downfall of Creon so that his suffering would be greater and that the entire city would learn a lesson.
