Lady Ina is the main character of "La Côte Basque." She is described as a gossipy, unhappy socialite, who spreads gossip in order to hide her own grief and loneliness. There is a sense that the loneliness at the heart of both her character and her actions is a parallel to that of narrator Jones who, as he himself hints at in narration, is just as lonely and just as guilty of gossip.
