Lady Ina is the main character of "La Côte Basque,". She is a gossipy and unhappy socialite, who uses pleasure in the discretion-free stories of her fellow socialites to mask her own sense of grief and loneliness at the breakup of her socially advantageous marriage. There is a sense that the loneliness at the heart of both her character and her actions is a parallel to that of narrator Jones who, as he himself hints at in narration, is just as lonely and just as hidden behind a mask of observant, gossipy, and ruthless storytelling.
