Like many young adult novels, the structure of the book follows the arc of a school year. The story begins with Anna being sent overseas to Paris for her senior year at a boarding school. As school begins, she meets all the new students and gains a new group of friends. The reader experiences the boarding school and all the new characters with Anna for the first time. As she gets to know St. Clair and his friends, so does the reader.
