When Louis brings Joe back to his apartment in Act 1, Scene 6, he immediately notices the lawyer's cologne. He explains that smell is actually little particles of a person - in this case, Joe - traveling through the air to another's nose. In this sense, bits of Joe are in Louis' nose and mouth.
