One major theme in the novel is that of drug addiction, specifically, drugs prescribed to young children. Over the course of the novel, we see Nancy prescribed drugs to sleep as an infant, drugs to control the behavior caused by the Phenobarbital, and further treatments prescribed to counteract the side effects of both. In college, Nancy becomes addicted to illegal drugs and leaves school to become a dancer.... she needs quick money to support her habit. She then enters a methadone program, something she will repeat over the years until her death.
