Who is Philip of Macedonia from The Campaigns of Alexander and what is their importance?

Philip of Macedonia was Alexander's father and king of Macedonia. He was assassinated twenty years after Alexander's birth. Philip is credited with bringing the Greek city-states together into a semblance of a modern nation. During his reign, cooperation was gained by the might of armies and the tactical skill of officers. Philip left Alexander with the potential to build an army strong enough to liberate the Asian Greek city-states. Alexander then goes onto conquer much of the known world.
