In the book’s final chapter, “Conclusion—The Future of the United States,” the book discusses persistent social and political problems in the U.S., as well as modern social and political movements towards Native sovereignty and self-determination. Dunbar-Ortiz mentions modern military conflicts such as America’s invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan as extensions of U.S. imperialism and militarism. Additionally, the U.S. has flouted national and international laws by engaging in human rights violations such as torture, imprisonment without trial, and others. Such violations are a logical extension of America’s violent, lawless campaigns against Native communities.
