What happened to the Scholars in the novel, An Ember in the Ashes?

Scholar lands were conquered 500 years before the start of the novel. The Scholars crumbled when the Martials invaded because their blades broke against the superior steel. Since then, the Martials have oppressed and enslaved the Scholars. Once the Scholar Empire was home to the finest universities and libraries in the world.
