What metaphors are used in An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser?

Dreiser uses the phrase "bad girl", as a metaphor that changes with each use. Roberta sees herself as a "bad girl" because of her lust for Clyde, after which, she decides that she must be a "bad girl" in order to keep him.
