Who are the important main characters in the book?

The book's main character is Chris Zajac, a fifth grade teacher at Kelly School in Holyoke, Maryland. The author, Tracy Kidder, has joined Chris' classroom as an observer.... she's there to observe Chris' teaching, as well as her students.
