What metaphors are used in American Sphinx by Joseph Ellis?

Ellis does not use metaphor in the text. He does, however, make special note that both Jefferson and Adams were intensely aware that they were writing for posterity in their correspondence, and that they tried to outdo each other in alliteration and
metaphor.
