Language is very important to the characters in the novel. As the first-person narrator, everything that happens is filtered through Lara Jean’s mind and her words. Aside from the dialogue of other characters, every word in the book is language straight from the mind of Lara Jean. As such, we can learn much about her character by simply analyzing the types of language she uses. When Lara Jean is on the bus on the way to New York for the class trip, she is nervous when everyone starts playing Truth or Dare: "Usually, I slip away to the kitchen or another room when this game gets started at other parties. But there's nowhere for me to slip away to today, for we are on a bus, and I am well and truly trapped" (40).
