The language of these stories is the language of the streets, and of the poor and largely un- or under-educated African Americans who inhabit them. This is particularly true of the dialogue used in the book, which is heavily laced with contractions (for example, “mo’” for “more”, “wit” for “with”, “offa” for “off of”, etc.). There is also a very large amount of profanity, as well as racist and sexist language, used throughout the dialogue – and many of the flashback scenes – in virtually all of these stories. The use of this language, and the frequency with which it is used, may offend some more sensitive readers.
