Nic is in this apartment when she decides to go home. It symbolizes the success she has achieved as she tries to gain self esteem for herself and from others and reach what she believes to be her full potential because she has a good job and a fiance who is a high-powered lawyer and from a rich family in Philadelphia. At the end of the novel, it is impossible for her to return to her success as she has to stay imprisoned in the house she escaped from in order to pay for her crime.
