Who is Debbie and what is her fate?

Debbie is the stray cat that Mrs. Ainsworth feeds two or three times a week when the cat appears. One Christmas Debbie appears at Mrs. Ainsworth's after being gone for weeks. She's carrying a tiny black kitten. She dies but leaves her little kitten for Mrs. Ainsworth to raise.
