What happens to the little stray dog that James and Siegfried observe begging in the marketplace?

The little dog is hit by a car. The police station calls Skeldale house when Siegfried and James are just about to depart for the Hunt Ball. They operate on him and save his life but he has to be put down if no one claims him as a pet. The young policeman decides to take the little dog for his two young daughters at the last minute.
