Ned Finch is a small, ineffectual farm hand who has lived with farmer Daggett since childhood. James notices that he always had an expectant expression on his face. His dull life ends when he meets jolly housekeeper/cook of a wealthy spinster. They fall in love and he becomes engaged to be married.
