The novel is written in modern-day English. The main characters are teenage boys who are living in a post-pandemic world. Most of the population has died, leaving the remaining people to make what they can of their lives. This is a brutal situation and death is a common part of this life. In addition to those who die from the superflu, some also die at the hands of other people. Some of the scenes depict the violence of those deaths. Jamie winds up shooting two men. He shoots one of them in the face and that scene is described with some details. These are not overly graphic but may upset sensitive readers.
