Why did Rick hate Haiti?

Haiti was an evil place before Rick got there and long after he left. Haiti's rulers had always taken more than any human could ever need and left millions with nothing. Worse than the starvation and the homelessness, many of the leaders tortured and killed innocent people including women and babies. Occasionally there had been some hope like when Aristide was elected, but the corruption ran so deeply that even the hope brings about more destruction.
