Hugh Knox, a priest in Saint Croix, used his influence on the island to send Alexander to study in America. Knox is described as a passionate man, who discovered Alexander as a young boy. Impressed by Alexander’s incredible writing and dedication to learning, Knox helped Alexander publish his first poems and gave him full access to the library. After a hurricane decimated the island in 1772, Knox was so inspired by Alexander’s letter to his father that he had it anonymously published and was able to convince the citizens of Saint Croix to donate to a fund to send Alexander to the colonies. If not for Knox, Alexander may never have reached America at all.
