What happened to Dan when he was beaten?

Dan stopped at the Marines Park bandstand to check for notes from any patients. Herbert Sunbury leaves a note that his children are sick. Dan goes to his house six miles past Bragg house on River Road. They have the typhoid Dan fears. He treats them and instructs them how to avoid further exposure. On the way home he sees a woman in distress on the side of the road. He stops to care for her but discovers she is a decoy when three armed men appear on the road. They tell Dan they're taking everything and to start walking. When he tries to keep his bag of medical supplies, they beat him unconscious.
