What tragedy happens to make the “fifth April… a time of grief and desolation”? (pg. 204) Why was it so tragic to Jethro specifically?

Jethro was devastated by the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was Jethro's hero. He was, however, assassinated on April 14, 1865 not April 5th.
