Who is Gobey from Abe Lincoln in Illinois?

Gobey is a free Negro who works for Seth Gale's family. His father had been a slave, but was freed by Seth's father twenty years earlier. While they lived in Maryland, there was always the danger that kidnappers might abduct Gobey and take him to the South, where they would sell him as a slave.
