Daniel Boone was a friend of Abraham Lincoln the senior, Abe’s grandfather. He was one of the leading men carving out the Wilderness Road from Virginia to Kentucky. He spoke of Kentucky valleys “rich with long slopes of black land and blue grass” and “tall timber and clear running waters,” forming mental pictures of beauty and abundance that were only “forty cents an acre” (5). He was influential in Abraham Lincoln the senior’s decision to move his family to Kentucky from Virginia.
