The old man is one of the individuals at the Petersons' cottage. While Fletcher is sleeping, he overhears the man saying many negative things about him. Upon waking, Fletcher imagines the man saying even more disparaging things. Believing his imaginings to be accurate, Fletcher confronts the old man, insisting that he is better than him. The old man is sure that Fletcher will ruin their youth.
