How does Fletcher treat the villagers in the story, A Village After Dark?

Throughout the story, no matter who Fletcher confronts in the village from his past, he treats them with scorn and condescension. He proves incapable of either acknowledging, owning, or atoning for his mistakes. He has returned to the village in desperate hopes that his reputation will have survived. Over the course of the narrative, Fletcher proves unreliable and self-involved. Though he has many chances to amend his errors from the past, Fletcher resorts to arrogance and cruelty.
