What is Laia's supernatural power in the novel, A Torch Against the Night?

Laia supernatural power is invisibility, which is fitting for her because she is frequently underestimated by the Empire forces, who dehumanize scholars as if they are invisible and non-human. Connected with the armlet symbol, Laia's power allows her to literally become invisible, but even when she is not exercising her power she is symbolically invisible in the eyes of the powerful Empire soldiers, who seek to eradicate the Scholars. Furthermore, Laia underestimates her own abilities and doubts herself; for example, she seeks reassurance from Keenan that she hasn't "ruined everything yet again" after making a decision (273). Laia's invisibility power symbolically demonstrates to herself that her individual skills and her bravery in battle (facilitated by the power itself) mean that she should not devalue herself.
