The fairies in the story appear as servants of Titania and Oberon. They provide food for the boy and eventually build him a coffin after he dies. The fairies are part of Titania and Oberon's family, and they too love and care for the boy. One fairy, Doorknob, tries the chemotherapy at the behest of Oberon. He complains about the taste and goes mad. Other fairies interfere with the hospital staff, decorate the room, and try to provide the most elaborate foods for the boy during his treatment.
