Deceit is a recurring idea in the story. Most of the energy expended by the principal characters in this novel is directed at deceiving someone else. The very premise on which the plot is built is, necessarily, deceptive. Jake Brigance must convince a jury that Carl Lee Hailey, who murdered two men while absolutely in his right mind, who contemplated and planned and then executed that plan to the final detail, was actually insane at the time of the shooting.
