The action begins to rise as soon the novel opens with Grisham describing the action leading up to Stuart being fatally shot. The exposition is scattered throughout the novel as Grisham describes the legal recourses of what Drew has done and Jake begins to get to know Drew and his family. The action continues to rise through Jake’s unwilling appointment to serve as Drew’s lawyer and the police officers’ rebellion against him.
